dust [2004]

An interactive vanitas installation

In our individualized and atomized societies, with the retreat of the organized religions out of general public life and the industrialisation of death, fewer and fewer hints about one of our most important existential conditions can be found anymore.

Dust is a interactive installation. It dissolves the shadow of a spectator into dust with the help of a computer simulation. The work was developed as a follow up of the vanitas pictures of the middle ages, where death, depicted as skeletons, dances around the people shown in everyday scenes in order to remind them of their transitoriness.
